Working with the Somali Community

There are a growing number of people from the Somalian Community living within the King's Cross and Brunswick area. KCB has been successful in obtaining neighbourhood renewal funding to provide services to the Somalian community since this particular community was not accessing main stream services.

As a result, the Somali community have been able to establish a number of services, as well as trips and events.

Doctor's Session

Somali speaking doctor attends KCB Neighbourhood Centre every Friday for 2 hours per week and offers advice to Somali clients.

The doctor checks their blood pressure and sugar levels, discusses medication prescribed by the GP and discusses different topics such as cancer, HIV, TB, Hepatitis B and C.

ESOL and Sewing Class

ESOL and sewing classes are being held in partnership with the Working Men's College. It is hoped that all trainees will be working towards gaining recognised qualifications.

Advice Sessions

Advice sessions at KCB are very popular. The majority of advice or support is for welfare benefits or health related.

Women's Exercise Session

A Somali women's exercise session is run at Chadswell Healthy Living Centre, targeting people who live in the King's cross area. The purpose is to improve general health among the Somali community.
